  • A regional retreat

This long weekend escape to New York's beautiful Finger Lakes region is Bikeout's first multi-day Getaway trip. In a small group setting, participants will recharge at a private glamping site for two nights, explore local parks and local bike trails, and enjoy delicious locally-prepared food and drinks. The trip will culminate in a traditional overnight bike camping excursion where we'll see the region from a new perspective on a supported trip that includes tent camping on a local farm.

    A special bike camping experience

After two nights of glamping, we'll ride 25 miles to a shiitake mushroom farm nestled near Finger Lakes National Forest. The ride will take us from Ithaca on the Black Diamond Trail and eventually to quiet back roads between Cayuga and Seneca lakes. After learning about specialty log-grown shrooms at the farm, we'll enjoy a campout with fresh dinner prepared with ingredients directly from the farm.

Freedom to explore

Much of this trip is guided, but there will be time to explore this beautiful area as you choose. Whether you're craving a local hike, lakeside bike ride or you're interested in tasting some of the region's famous wine, we'll give you our best recommendations to make the most of your experience.

This is a digital trip guide for someone interested in exploring a curated Bikeout experience as a self-guided trip on their own. Our Guide provides you with a map of points of interest, turn-by-turn directions, accommodation recommendations, a sample itinerary, exclusive partner discounts and other resources so that you'll spend less time planning and more time focusing on having a great time on your bike!

This trip, which features a variety of activities, also has plenty of chances to get you out on your bike. There will be opportunities for short 1-hour to 3-hour bike rides, and our trip will culminate with a two-day, overnight bike camping trip. Discovering the area by bike will allow you to truly enjoy the lush greenery, lakeside views, and magnificent sights of the region.

This is a 4-day trip with a single bike camping overnight. The guided bike camping overnight will start near our glampsite in Ithaca and continue north to follow the Black Diamond Trail next to Cayuga Lake. There's a break for lunch at Taughannock Falls State Park before we continue on back roads to reach Hawk Meadow Farm for a total of almost 20 miles on the first day of riding. The next morning, after our campout, we'll continue riding backroads west about 15 miles until we reach our destination near Seneca Lake.

The terrain on the guided bike camping experience includes some hills and moderate elevation gain. About 10 miles of the route will be on protected paved trails, with about 25 miles on roadways with car traffic. For the road riding portion, Bikeout works with local officials to select the safest route possible.

During this Getaway, riders should feel comfortable on their bikes for up to 2-3 hours at a time. We recommend checking out our training tips and always consulting a doctor to make sure you are in good health before starting any new training regimen. The overnight trip will be guided with the opportunity to have your gear transported to and from the farm back to Firelight Camps. You won't need special gear to carry your baggage for any portion of this trip, unless you would like to bring your own panniers or saddlebags.

You will have the opportunity to partake in other optional bike rides and physical activities such as yoga, and hiking, that meet your ability level.

Arrive at Firelight Camps in Ithaca, New York as early as 3 p.m. and find your way to your glampsite. If you arrive early, we'll have recommendations for local sights to explore. That evening we'll gather around the fire so you can meet your Bikeout guides and group and you'll enjoy a s'more and drink on us while we celebrate the start of our journey.

Kick off your morning with an optional yoga class provided by Firelight Camps, before enjoying a provided, locally-sourced breakfast. We'll learn together during a bike camping workshop led by an expert from Cornell Outdoor Education where you'll get inspired and level up your bike travel skills. That afternoon you'll have time to explore the Finger Lakes as you choose whether you want to hike some of the excellent local trails, paddle a lake, or indulge in one of the regions famous wineries and distilleries. Finally, we'll regroup for a ride around the Cayuga lake waterfront before returning to Firelight Camps for dinner and a campfire to round out the night.

We'll wake up after our final night at Firelight Camps, enjoy breakfast, and get ready to embark on the first day of our bike camping overnight trip. We'll travel through Ithaca and onto the Black Diamond trail before stopping and enjoying our packed lunch at Taughannock Falls State Park, home of the largest waterfall east of the Rockies. After arriving at Hawk Meadow, a mushroom farm, we'll enjoy a tour from our hosts and unwind as we eat a farm-to-table dinner prepared from ingredients directly from the farm. Finally, we'll camp out under the stars.

On our final morning we'll head west on our bikes toward Seneca lake before celebrating the end our trip with a group lunch and paired tasting. Everyone and their bikes will be transported back to Firelight Camps in the early afternoon to say our farewells and head home after a amazing experience.
